Osborne House

Isle of Wight, South East England

Once the summer hideaway of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Osborne House on the Isle of Wight still exudes Victorian-era elegance today. Restored and lovingly maintained by the English Heritage society, the house is now one of the island’s most popular attractions, offering a glimpse of the lives of British royalty, along with gardens, a museum, and a private beach.

The basics

The estate sprawls inland from the Isle of Wight coast, just east of the town East Cowes. It’s easy to reach from Ryde, Newport, or East Cowes, but there are plenty of tour options available, too.

If you’re a cruise-ship passenger with only limited time on the island, or if you’re simply looking for a hassle-free way to visit Osborne House, consider opting for a private day trip or going with a private driver. You’ll enjoy door-to-door transportation and hear insider tips about the Isle of Wight as you go.

Things to know before you go

  • To see everything that Osborne House has to offer, aim to spend most of the day here.
  • There are plenty of eating options, including a self-service canteen, a beach café, and an ice cream shop.
  • A family picnic area is next to the playground; you’ll also find benches and other picnic spots around the grounds.
  • Victorian-style souvenirs, jewelry, toys, and books are available at the gift shop.
  • Facilities include baby-changing points and wheelchair-accessible restrooms.
  • Strollers cannot be taken into the house, and must be left near the house entrance.
  • The site is only partially wheelchair accessible; check directly with the attraction for more information.

How to get there

If you’re driving, enter the postal code PO32 6JX into your GPS to find Osbourne House. Free parking is available near the reception center, with overflow parking a few minutes away. To encourage you to leave the car behind, there’s a discount on walk-up entrance tickets if you arrive by public transit or bike. The public bus lines #4 and #5 from East Cowes offer an easy route to Osborne House.

When to get there

Osborne House is open throughout the year. Note that between early November and mid-March, access to the house is mainly by guided tour only, though there are some exceptions, for example the UK February school half-term vacation and key holiday season dates. During the peak months, the estate is open Wednesday through Sunday, from mid-morning to late-afternoon.

The Swiss Cottage

A highlight of Osborne House for many visitors is the Swiss Cottage, an alpine-esque cabin that doubled as a playhouse for the royal children. Inside, you can see a sitting room, miniature kitchen, and larder; outside there are replica miniature wheelbarrows for the garden.
