Otrobanda

Willemstad

Otrobanda is full of vibrant colors and is the perfect blend of busyness and laid-back island vibes. In the historic quarter of Curacao’s Willemstad, the neighborhood overlooks the mouth of St. Anna Bay. Here, colonial-era buildings are decked out in tropical shades, and locals and visitors relax on the waterfront and enjoy the ocean view.

The basics

Along with Punda, Otrobanda is part of the cultural heart of Willemstad. Explore the island’s culinary landscape with a street-food tour, or head to Klipstraat to find the Kura Hulanda Museum, which delves into the history of the slave trade in Curacao. As you wander, you’ll be surrounded by colorful murals and other street art. In the evening, join the crowd in the courtyard of Fort Rif, where you’ll find open-air restaurants and bars.

Things to know before you go

  • Bring plenty of water, and don’t forget sunscreen.

  • Bring cash to shop at the street vendor stalls.

  • Wear good walking shoes so you can explore to your heart’s content.

How to get there

Many people get accommodations in Otrobanda. Otherwise, you’ll likely arrive here via the Otrabanda Bus Station on the corner of Arubastraat and Pater Euwensweg—the station is a main bus stop covering the whole island. Taxis are plentiful, and rental cars are fairly easy to find—they can be a good option if you’re staying outside the city center.

When to get there

Aim for a morning or late afternoon visit to avoid the heat of the day. If you overheat, head to one of the shady benches along the waterfront to catch a cool breeze. Weekdays are an excellent time to visit, as some of the museums and other attractions in the district close early on the weekends or aren’t open at all.

Nature in the heart of the city

Curacao Rif Mangrove Park is a welcome surprise. A 10-minute walk from central Otrobanda, this peaceful nature reserve is a respite from the city bustle. Wander the boardwalk trails through the mangroves and look for the birds and marine life that make their homes in this important ecosystem.

Is visiting Otrobanda worth it?

Yes, Otrobanda is one of the most eclectic, colorful neighborhoods in Willemstad. The fading glory of its Dutch colonial architecture contrasts with its vibrant street art—murals, art installations, and open-air sculptures dot the district. The area is home to the Kura Hulanda Museum and Curaçao Museum, plus shopping and dining.

What is the best time of year to visit Otrobanda?

Between January and April is the best time to visit Otrobanda, as well as its island home of Curaçao. In these months, the temperatures are mild, and there is little rain to mar the sunny Caribbean days. It's also when steady breezes take the edge off the midday heat.

How long does it take to tour Otrobanda?

You can cover the entire neighborhood of Otrobanda in just an hour or two if you don’t stop to visit its two museums, shop in the Renaissance Mall set inside historic Rif Fort, or relax over a drink or meal in one of the district’s buzzy restaurants or bars.

What language do they speak in Otrobanda?

The language most commonly spoken in Otrobanda is Papiamentu, a local Creole with Portuguese, African, Dutch, and Spanish influences that is ubiquitous across Curaçao. Most islanders also speak Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish, and English—especially those who work with international visitors in tourism and hospitality.

Is Punda or Otrobanda better?

It depends on the experience you are looking for. Punda is one of the most popular (and touristed) historic areas of Willemstad, with a variety of sights but also big crowds. Set across the bay, Otrobanda has a more authentic, local feel, though it's also grittier than its polished neighbor.

Is Otrobanda walkable?

Yes, Otrobanda is a compact neighborhood that's easy to explore on foot. Take your time to stroll along its technicolor streets to admire the street art and soak up the atmosphere of this historic corner of the capital. For a break, relax at one of the many bars and restaurants.
