Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn, South Africa

Best known as the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn has more to offer than just a chance to visit ostrich farms. Set in the Little Karoo—South Africa’s semi-desert—the town is the gateway to the Swartberg mountains, the Cango Caves, and innumerable nature reserves and trails. Visitors can also enjoy local restaurants and wineries.

The Basics

Most visitors come to Oudshoorn to see the area’s renowned ostrich farms, which have been supplying products to Europe since the 1800s. You can see the operations for yourself on a tour of an ostrich farm, where you can feed the giant birds, stand on their surprisingly strong eggs, and learn about the industry.

Afterward, make a trip into the Swartberg mountains and enjoy panoramic views of the Little Karoo from the Swartberg Pass, then take a tour of the nearby Cango Caves, which boast stunning rock formations. Many tourists hit all of these sites on a multi-day tour of the Western Cape.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Accommodations in Oudtshoorn range from affordable bed and breakfasts to luxurious lodges.

  • Bring sturdy hiking shoes for exploring the mountain trails surrounding the town.

  • Oudtshoorn provides Garden Route travelers a change of pace from the nearby coastal towns.

How to Get There

You can reach Oudtshoorn by car: Take the N2 (South Africa’s major coastal route) to the N12. Many tours of the region include round-trip transportation.

When to Get There

Oudtshoorn welcomes visitors all year round, and most of the town’s top activities (including caving and ostrich viewing) are enjoyable in any weather. The local weather is relatively temperate but can be on the hot side in summer (mid-November to early April). If you want to make the drive to Swartberg Pass, avoid traveling on rainy days, when the road can become impassable.

Visiting the Cango Caves

The Cango Caves, located 18 miles (30 kilometers) outside of Oudtshoorn, constitute one of the largest cave systems in the world. Most visitors explore the ancient caverns on a guided tour that is easily accessible and well-lit. If you’re feeling adventurous, opt for a more challenging spelunking route that includes narrow tunnels barely wide enough to slither through on your belly. Visitors are not permitted to explore the caves without a guide.
