Paphos Municipal Beach
Paphos, Cyprus
Large, open terraces surround the tiny stone beach at Paphos Municipal Beach, also known as the Paphos Municipal Baths. Unlike the open sand beaches farther down the coast, this small beach in the heart of Kato Paphos features wooden decks for sunbathing and a small break in the rocky coastline for entering the water to cool off.
The basics
When exploring Kato Paphos, whether you’re visiting its historical sites or just taking a walk along the scenic promenade, it’s hard to miss Paphos Municipal Beach thanks to its central location. Sit for a moment to watch locals mill about socializing or enjoy the view, before walking along the waterfront to Paphos Castle or down the Paphos coastal path. Of course, those looking to sunbathe or swim could spend hours here, before popping over to the nearby row of shops for a snack or meal.
Things to know before you go
The beach has a large block of public restrooms and changing rooms. Assorted restaurants, bars, and ice cream shops sit across from the beach. Stairs lead into the water farther along from the small stone beach. Some sharp rocks make this an unsuitable place for children to swim. Depending on the season, sun beds and umbrellas may be available for rent.
How to get there
Paphos Municipal Beach is the closest beach and swimming spot along the Paphos Promenade to the city’s castle and entrance to the Nea Paphos archaeological site. Visitors can walk to the beach from many of the main attractions in Kato Paphos, or take one of the various buses that stop along Poseidonos Avenue.
When to get there
Swimming and sunbathing are your two activity options at Paphos Municipal Beach, so this is a place to visit on nice, warm days. The area is quite a common local social spot and meeting point, so come early to find a place to relax before it gets busy. Visitors in the winter will often be met with large piles of pungent seaweed and weather too cold to make the most of the area.
Choosing between the different Paphos beaches
Paphos Municipal Beach is just one of many places you can go in Paphos for swimming and sunbathing. Follow the coastal path and you’ll reach a series of beaches, including ones with sand, such as Vrisoudia ΙΙ Beach and Pachyammos Beach. You can also look to the coast north of the Tombs of the Kings to Venus Beach and Sandy Beach for your seaside retreat.
