POINT OF INTEREST

Parque Garota de Ipanema

Av. Francisco Bhering, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 22080-050

A beachfront public park located between Copacabana Fort (Forte de Copacabana) and Arpoador Rock (Pedra do Arpoador), Parque Garota de Ipanema takes its name from the bossa nova hit “Garota de Ipanema” (“The Girl From Ipanema”). It’s a tranquil green space with features including a skate park and playground, as well as scenic viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

The basics

Rio de Janeiro offers one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, and Parque Garota de Ipanema is one of the best places to take in its splendors. Recently refurbished, it offers walking trails and green spaces—as well as recreational areas like a skate park, concert bowl, and playground—making it a popular, all-ages locale. Bring a picnic lunch to eat on one of the park benches, or take your camera along to capture the sunset from the park’s viewpoints (just be mindful of your valuables while you visit).

Thanks to its small size and accessible location near some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, the park is easy to explore independently as part of a day of sightseeing in Rio’s Zona Sul.

Things to know before you go

  • The park is free and open to the public.

  • The majority of the park’s walkways are level or equipped with ramps, and are accessible to wheelchair users.

  • Dogs are permitted in the park.

  • While the park is generally family-friendly and busy, avoid visiting at night and be mindful of your belongings.

How to get there

Parque Garota de Ipanema is located at Avenida Francisco Bhering, right between Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. The nearest Metrô station, on the L1, and L4 trains, is General Osório/Ipanema, just a few minutes away. Buses, taxis, and rideshare services also frequent the area.

When to get there

The park is open daily, typically from early morning to early evening. It’s at its most popular in the summer, when concerts are sometimes held, and it’s worth going on a good-weather day to soak up the scenery. Sunset is another great time to visit; just be sure to leave before nightfall.

Pedra do Arpoador

Just next to the park is the Pedra do Arpoador, or Arpoador Rock, a rocky promontory that juts into the Atlantic Ocean. The site offers especially impressive views of the city’s coastline. Sunset is an excellent time to go, though you can come by at other times to walk its trails, head to its summit, and spot surfers riding the waves below.
