POINT OF INTEREST

Parque Isla Salamanca

Barranquilla, Colombia

Connecting the cities of Barranquilla and Santa Marta, Parque Isla Salamanca features mangrove swamps, forests, and beaches on the estuary of the Magdalena River. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, thanks to the wealth of wildlife that calls it home: numerous bird species, leatherback and painted turtles, the crab-eating raccoon, and Mexican anteaters.

The basics

You can explore Parque Isla Salamanca by boat or on foot. There are three trails—Cocodrilo, Olivos, and Clemanos—all of which showcase the mangrove ecosystem, offer the chance to spot wildlife, and see the unique fauna of the natural park. There’s also an elevated platform over the Clarin Viejo Canal. Some Barranquilla sightseeing tours and Magdalena River cruises take you past Parque Isla Salamanca, but the best way to explore is on a mangrove canoe ride.

Things to know before you go

  • Wear plenty of insect repellent—the hot and humid mangroves are a magnet for mosquitoes.

  • If hiking, wear closed-toe shoes and breathable long sleeves and pants to protect yourself from flora and fauna.

  • There are no trash cans in Parque Isla Salamanca, so bring a ziploc bag to pack any waste in.

How to get there

Parque Isla Salamanca is 2.7 miles (4.5 kilometers) from the center of Barranquilla; there’s no public transport, so you’ll need to arrive at the park by booking a rideshare app. Boat tours of Parque Isla Salamanca depart from the Puerta Oro Boardwalk across the Magdalena River.

When to get there

Parque Isla Salamanca is open from morning to dusk daily. The best time to visit for bird-watching is during the rainy season from March through September. However, if you prefer dry days and sunny skies, visit from December through February.

More national parks on Colombia’s Caribbean Coast

Along with Parque Isla Salamanca, Colombia’s Caribbean Coast is home to some of the country’s top national attractions. Highlights include Tayrona National Park with its rugged coastal landscapes and lush forest, and Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Park, which features stunning islands and coral reefs.
