Paul da Serra Plateau
Madeira, Madeira
Located 5,000 feet (1,500 meters above sea level, the Paul da Serra Plateau is the flattest part of Madeira and offers panoramic views of emerald valleys and mountains. On a clear day you can see as far as the North Atlantic Ocean.
The basics
Excursions that explore the western landscapes of Madeira typically include a stop at Paul da Serra Plateau, which contrasts with the mountainous landscapes that characterize the rest of the island. West island day trips also tend to cover Cabo Girao (home to a skywalk), the quaint coastal village of Ribeira Brava, and the natural pools of Porto Moniz.
Things to know before you go
Paul da Serra Plateau is the starting point for several levada (aqueduct) walks. If you’re planning on hiking, wear sturdy footwear and carry plenty of water. In the vicinity of Paul da Serra Plateau you’ll find a hotel and a cafe that serves hot and cold refreshments. The flat terrain of Paul da Serra Plateau means that it's easy for travelers using strollers and wheelchairs to get about.
How to get there
There’s no public transportation to or through Paúlda Serra Plateau. Highway ER110 goes through the plateau in a zig-zag while ER209 runs along its western side; note there are dangerous switchbacks on the southern descent and cows often block the roads. To avoid navigating the steep roads, opt for a tour that includes transport.
When to get there
For the lowest rainfall and temperatures ideal for hiking and outdoor exploration, visit Madeira between May and September. To experience thinner crowds, visit outside of the European summer holidays, which span July and August.
Walking on Cabo Girao
No visit to Madeira would be complete without exploring Cabo Girao, a coastal village that overlooks some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Cabo Girao’s indisputable main draw is its Skywalk, a white-knuckle glass walkway that offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. In the village itself you’ll find whitewashed houses and quaint restaurants with ocean views.
