Pe'epe'e Falls
Hilo, Big Island of Hawaii
Only in Hawaii would a 60-foot (18-meter) waterfall be a lesser-known attraction. Not far from the famous Rainbow Falls in Wailuku River State Park, Pe’epe’e Falls forms the backdrop to the Boiling Pots Area, a thundering section of the powerful Wailuku River. While not easily accessible for most visitors, it's another of Hawaii’s magnificent views.
The basics
The most direct access to Pe’epe’e Falls—pronounced pay-ay-pay-ay—is at the Boiling Pots Overlook. From there, the waterfall is about a quarter-mile (.6 kilometers) away. Eagle-eyed visitors will notice a path to the river toward the waterfall on the overlook's right side. Boiling Pots and the waterfall used to be more accessible, but several people have died exploring it. Now, going beyond the overlook is highly discouraged. The view from the overlook, however, is worthwhile.
Things to know before you go
- There is no entrance fee to visit and explore Pe'epe'e Falls and the surrounding Wailuku River State Park.
- The overlook has a small parking lot, restrooms, and a grassy picnic area.
- Do not attempt to swim or hike down into the Boiling Pots area—it’s incredibly dangerous.
How to get there
Pe'epe'e Falls is just a short drive from downtown Hilo. To reach it, take Waianuenue Avenue heading west, following signs for Rainbow Falls. Continue past Rainbow Falls for about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) until you reach the Boiling Pots parking area. From there, an overlook provides views of the scenic falls.
When to get there
The best time to visit Pe'epe'e Falls is in the morning for optimal sunlight and smaller crowds. If you can time it right, visiting after rainfall enhances the waterfall’s flow (and the Boiling Pots rolling bubbles). Avoid late afternoon visits, as shadows can obscure the view of the cascade.
Going beyond national parks
The Big Island has some of the best parks and recreation areas in Hawaii, if not the country. After visiting Wailuku River State Park and Pe’epe’e Falls, check out Akaka Falls State Park for its lush vegetation and waterfalls, Mackenzie State Recreation Area for dramatic coastline views, Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area for its white sand beach, and Puʻuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, a place of refuge for ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers—just to name a few.
