POINT OF INTEREST

Pelican Point

Walvis Bay, Namibia

Located off the coast of Namibia, Pelican Point is a remote peninsula and sandbar in the Erongo region. With the Atlantic Ocean on one side, and the calm Walvis Bay Lagoon on the other, Pelican Bay is known for its stunning natural beauty. It’s also home to abundant wildlife, including seals, flamingos, cormorants, and pelicans.

The basics

Explore the salt pans, coastal flats, and beaches of Pelican Point on a guided 4x4 tour from Walvis Bay or Swakopmund. Kayak to Pelican Point through Walvis Bay Lagoon, and look for the large colony of Cape fur seals and one of the largest flocks of flamingos in southern Africa. Or go for a boat cruise and look for whales, dolphins, and mola molas. Stop by the historic 115-foot (35-meter) tall Pelican Point Lighthouse, and refuel with a drink or snacks from the Pelican Point Lodge next door.

Other area highlights include oyster farms, an old shipwreck, tracks from an old supply train, and one of the largest salt mines in the world.

Things to know before you go

  • Pelican Point is only accessible by 4x4 vehicle, kayak, or boat.
  • The Pelican Point Lodge is the only place at Pelican Point with amenities and services, including food, drinks, lodging, restrooms, and Wi-Fi.
  • Don’t forget your camera, as the area offers stellar views.

How to get there

Pelican Point is located northwest of Walvis Bay, which is around 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Swakopmund. It’s easiest to visit as part of a guided tour, which will include a 4x4 driver experienced with driving on the sandy terrain.

When to get there

Pelican Bay can be visited year-round. High season in the area is from July to October, though Pelican Point rarely gets too crowded. Visit in the summer (December to April) to go birdwatching, as migratory birds will be in the region during that time, in addition to the resident birdlife.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is the third largest town in Namibia and its largest port, with fishing being its largest industry. Other area highlights include Bird Island and Bird Sanctuary, home to a large population of birds, several large dunes, including Dune 7, where visitors can go sandboarding, visit the Walvis Bay Museum, and see the massive salt works complex.
