Accessibility

Most of the prison is wheelchair accessible via paved pathways and ramps; note that some older areas may have uneven surfaces, and chairs may not fit through the entrances to the H and B divisions. Service animals are permitted.

Age limits

None. However, due to the mature subject matter and potentially frightening nature of some tours, it may not be suitable for young children.

Pentridge Prison is located in Coburg, a suburb north of Melbourne’s city center. The site is easily accessible by both private car and public transportation, and many guided tours also provide transportation directly from the city.

Driving

From Melbourne’s CBD, take the CityLink/Tulla Freeway, then exit onto Sydney Road (Highway 17) and continue north. Turn onto Urquhart Street, which leads directly to the prison. On-site parking is available and free for the first three hours.

Public transportation

Take the 19 tram from the Elizabeth Street/Bourke Street stop in Melbourne’s CBD and ride to the stop near Pentridge Prison, which is located on the corner of Sydney Road and Urquhart Street.

Best times to visit

For fewer crowds and a more atmospheric experience, consider a morning visit on a weekday. The guided tours often have specific start times, so check in advance.

Best days to visit

The prison is open seven days a week. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends. On Thursdays, there are tour-and-dinner packages that include a meal at the nearby North & Common restaurant.

Melbourne’s temperate climate means Pentridge Prison can be comfortably visited year-round. The winter months (June–August) may see fewer crowds than the summer, making it easier to explore at your own pace.

Special events

During Melbourne International Games Week in October, the prison hosts a 3-hour “Call of Cthulhu” storytelling session, where teams can play the role-playing game inside the H Division cells.
