Pentridge Prison
Pentridge Shopping Centre, 1 Champ St., Coburg, Victoria, 3058
Pentridge Prison is one of Melbourne’s most significant historical sites, offering a chilling glimpse into Australia’s penal history. Operating for nearly 150 years, this former maximum-security prison once held some of the nation’s most notorious criminals. Today, the site has been transformed into a museum where visitors can walk through the original cell blocks and explore the grim realities of prison life. It’s an immersive experience that provides a unique perspective on a dark chapter of the country’s past.
Ways to explore
To experience Pentridge Prison, choose from a variety of tour options that cater to different interests. General entry tickets let you explore the H Division and other key areas at your own pace with the help of informative signage. Guided tours are also available, led by expert guides who share detailed stories about the prisoners, guards, and infamous events that occurred within the walls.
For those seeking a more thrilling experience, book a special nighttime tour that focuses on the paranormal activity reported at the site. Regardless of the option you choose, you’ll get a comprehensive look into the lives of those who were confined within Pentridge’s walls.

Most of the prison is wheelchair accessible via paved pathways and ramps; note that some older areas may have uneven surfaces, and chairs may not fit through the entrances to the H and B divisions. Service animals are permitted.
