People's History Museum
Left Bank, Manchester, North West England, M3 3ER
The People’s History Museum tells the story of democracy in the UK, and collects, studies, and displays materials related to the lives of working people. Housed in a Grade II listed former hydraulic pumping station that has since been given a striking architectural makeover, the museum underwent a major renovation in 2010.
The basics
With origins dating back to the 1970s, the People’s History Museum in Manchester is home to one of the country’s largest collections of political materials. The exhibitions span more than 200 years of history, focusing on labor movements and political events, including everything from women’s suffrage struggles and World War I to the 1980s miners’ strikes. Along with the world’s largest collection of trade-union banners, the museum brings together photographs, textiles, badges, posters, and other objects. Interactive installations and play areas cater to younger visitors.
The People’s History Museum is easy to explore independently, and can be included on a cultural day out in Manchester.
