POINT OF INTEREST

Perspektivet Museum

Storgata 95, Tromso, Norway, 9008

Perspectives big and small (read: local and global) reign at this small museum. Visit to examine what it means to be from the far north—and to be a human at all. Permanent exhibits are dedicated to the life and works of writer and artist Cora Sandel, known for the Alberta Trilogy, and to Puutalo, a Finnish company that built prefabricated wooden homes for refugees.

The basics

This museum lies in the center of Tromso in Storgata 95, a beautiful wooden villa built in 1838 that’s a treat to explore. The exhibits are spread over three floors, with two dedicated to Cora Sandel, providing a window onto her creative life in several countries; Sandel, one of the great Norwegian writers of the 20th century, lived in part of the building during her youth. Photography exhibitions are often hosted here as well.

  • Visitors under 18 and students always enter for free.

How to get there

In the center of Tromso, the museum is near the waterfront on the northern end of Storgata Street, next to the Verdensteateret Cinema. The city is small and walkable, making the museum easily reachable on foot. On public transit, buses #20 and #24 stop at Havnegata Street just south of the museum.

When to get there

The museum is open Tuesday–Sunday, staying open slightly later into the evening on weekends; it’s closed on Mondays and on national holidays including Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Good Friday. Check the museum website for a calendar of events, which includes days with free admission and special events and exhibits.

Perspektivet Folkeparken

Folkeparken is an open-air extension of the Perspektivet Museum, showcasing historical buildings in a park on the south side of Tromso Island. While the Perspektivet Museum focuses on contemporary culture, Folkeparken offers a chance to experience Northern Norwegian history through its preserved structures at two key sites: Kvitnesgarden, a 19th-century trading post highlighting local commerce, and Mortengarden, a coastal farm from the 18th century.
