Routinely voted one of the world’s best, most immersive theme parks, Phantasialand—near Cologne, Germany—may be small, but you’d never know it. With themed areas like Deep in Africa, Mexico, and Rookburgh, there are multiple worlds to explore (and new attractions are constantly added). From nearly record-breaking thrill rides to relaxing boat journeys, every kind of excitement lies within Phantasialand.
The basics
Phantasialand opened in 1967, and it’s been evolving ever since—case in point: Taron, the longest multi-launch rollercoaster in the world. There’s also Raik, the world's fastest family boomerang rollercoaster; Black Mamba, which drops you toward rocky ravines at high speed; and F.L.Y., a launched flying coaster.
And then there are the slower-paced attractions, like River Quest (putting you through the “world’s biggest splash”), the steam carousel, and the playgrounds for the little ones. Live shows, holiday markets, restaurants and bars, and tons of festivities make Phantasialand a well-rounded adventure.
Things to know before you go
Taron is the most popular ride; if you’re at the park when it opens, head there first to avoid the lines.
Buy the Quick Pass or Quick Pass Plus to skip lines at specific rides.
Three hotels connect to the park for overnight adventures (the newest, the Hotel Charles Lindbergh, is steampunk-themed).
Apart from the water rides, the park is open in winter—with holiday markets, events, and lights.
How to get there
The park is roughly 20 minutes away from the Cologne Bonn Airport. If traveling via personal vehicle, reach the park via the A553 motorway (exit 2 for Bruhl-Sud). A park shuttle can also pick you up at the KVB stop of bus line 18 (Bruhl-Mitte) or the Bruhl (Rheinland) train station.
When to get there
Many visitors say you need two days to “do Phantasialand,” but you can squeeze it into one if you come early and stay late. Expect crowds no matter when you arrive, but visiting during colder seasons and mid-week will get you more elbow room. The park is open daily, year-round.
