POINT OF INTEREST

Phoenix Zoo

455 N Galvin Parkway, Phoenix, Arizona

Founded by Robert E. Maytag in 1962, the Phoenix Zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States—home to some 3,000 animals living across 125 acres (51 hectares) of naturalistic exhibit space. Thirty of the zoo’s resident species are considered endangered or threatened.

The Phoenix Zoo ranks as one of the city’s top family attractions, as well as one of the best zoological parks in the country. The zoo offers a variety of tour options, from eco-shuttle tours of the entire zoo to "backstage" tours that offer closer glimpses into different animal habitats.

  • The Phoenix Zoo is a must-visit for families and animal lovers.
  • Don’t forget to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.
  • Pack a swimsuit for kids who might want to cool off at Yakulla Caverns or Leapin’ Lagoon (open March to October).
  • The zoo is both wheelchair accessible and sensory inclusive.

The entrance to the Phoenix Zoo is located on Galvin Parkway in the heart of Papago Park. The easiest way to get there is by car, but you can also ride the light rail to Washington/Priest station and connect to bus 1.

The zoo is open daily throughout the year, with shorter hours in the summer months (June to August) to account for the heat. The best time to visit for both good weather and sparser crowds is on a weekday between September and October or January and May.

Unique to the Phoenix Zoo is the Endangered Species Carousel. This ride might look like a classic carousel, but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that each animal is different. Instead of the usual horses, you’ll find a lion, elephant, rhino, zebra, and sea dragon, each handcrafted to look like its animal inspiration.

For those planning a visit to the Phoenix Zoo, parking is free for all guests. However, it can be busy on weekends, meaning you'll have to walk a bit to the entrance. This makes the trip to the zoo affordable and accessible to all visiting with their own vehicle.

Most visitors typically take around four hours to walk through the zoo, assuming they're stopping to admire the animals along the way. Of course, your time in each exhibit will depend on your fascination and interest, so plan accordingly.

Yes, you can bring a water bottle to the zoo. Staying hydrated during your visit is key to enjoying everything the Phoenix Zoo offers. Be sure to fill your bottle before heading out and refill it at the water fountains throughout the park.

If you're considering a trip to the Phoenix Zoo, it's wise to book your tickets in advance. While same-day admission is allowed, there are certain days throughout the year when the zoo reaches capacity. Purchasing your tickets online is also cheaper, saving you time and money.

The zoo has a strict policy on ensuring animals' and visitors' safety and well-being. Items such as firearms, explosives, and alcohol are strictly forbidden on the premises. Additionally, sound-producing items and wheeled transport like skateboards, bicycles, and scooters are not allowed.

Visitors can take photographs and videos throughout the park, with a few exceptions. Flash photography is prohibited in specific animal exhibits, and drones are not permitted in the park. Additionally, professional photographers or videographers are required to obtain a permit in advance for commercial use.
