Piazza Gae Aulenti
Piazza Gae Aulenti 1785, Milan, Lombardy, 20124
One of Milan’s jewels of contemporary urban design, the futuristic Piazza Gae Aulenti was inaugurated in 2012 and is named after the Italian architect who designed Paris’ Musee d’Orsay. The square is lined by three steel-and-glass towers—one of which, Torre Unicredit, is Italy's tallest building—and is known for its vibrant nightlife.
The basics
Fans of contemporary design will appreciate the bold look of Piazza Gae Aulenti, located in Milan’s financial district north of the city center, near the Garibaldi train station. This circular space is elevated above the surrounding ground level, with walkways running around and across its central pool and dancing water fountain displays. A footbridge connects the piazza to the trendy Corso Como and its many restaurants and bars, making it a popular meeting place for locals.
Take a tour that focuses on Milan’s contemporary architecture and design to learn more about this striking public space and other highlights of the city’s skyline, including the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova and the award-winning Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest). Some street art tours, especially those that explore the nearby neighborhood of Isola, also stop in Piazza Gae Aulenti.
