Pinnacles Desert
Nambung National Park, Perth, Western Australia, 6511
Although otherworldly in appearance, the Pinnacles Desert is 100 percent on planet Earth. Located north of Perth along the Indian Ocean's Coral Coast in Nambung National Park in Western Australia (WA), this vast sandy expanse is filled with towering limestone pillars. The site makes for a popular day trip from Perth since it is only a few hours' drive away. The desert is a popular natural attraction covering an area of 470 acres (190 hectares) within the 43,211-acre (17,487-hectare) Nambung National Park. Roughly 250,000 visitors come from all over the world to see the yellow sand with the iconic limestone pillars jutting out. The basics

Nature lovers can catch sight of kangaroos, koalas, and wombats on tours that stop at Caversham Wildlife Park and Yanchep National Park, while adventurers can explore the Lancelin sand dunes via 4WD vehicle or sandboard. Or if you’re feeling ambitious, pack it all in with the Pinnacles Desert, Koalas and Sandboarding 4WD Day Tour from Perth.

How to get there
Nambung National Park is a 2- to 3-hour drive from Perth along Indian Ocean Drive, making it an easy day trip from the city. If driving yourself, track your fuel and fill up when possible as there can be stretches of up to 185 miles (300 kilometers) between service stations. The Pinnacles Desert Discovery Centre is typically open daily from mid-morning to mid-afternoon and can provide information about the park.
When to get there
The best time to visit is spring (September to October) when Western Australia's native wildflowers paint the desert with vibrant colors. Book a sunset tour to see a light show across the Pinnacles, or maximize your time by heading out early in the morning; you'll want the extra time to explore the many parks and beaches along the way.
What to do in Perth
The capital of Western Australia has plenty to offer the first-time or return visitor. You can visit the parks, gardens, and endless beaches, and take in sights such as Elizabeth Quay and the Swan Valley wineries, independently or on locally-led tours.
Perth offers the best of both worlds when it comes to relaxation and excitement. Hang out along the coast and relax on the white sand beaches, visiting the quaint cafes for a bite to eat, or venture inland to the bustling metropolis for art galleries and local events for a lively evening.
