Playa de Muro
Mallorca, Majorca
Regularly dubbed one of the world’s best beaches, this long sweep of blonde sand sits at the northeastern corner of Mallorca, one of Spain’s sun-kissed Balearic Islands. Covering just under 4 miles (6 kilometers), the beach is popular with families who come to enjoy its far-reaching shallow waters and soft sands, and relax in the beach clubs, hotels, and restaurants that throng the shores.
The basics
One of Mallorca’s most popular beaches, Playa de Muro’s shallow waters and lifeguards attract families with young kids, while windy days bring kite surfers, wind surfers, and stand-up paddle boarders. Travelers can rent an electric stand-up paddle board or boat to explore this area of the coast at your leisure—or combine a visit with a trip to Port d’Alcudia Beach or the adjacent S'Albufera Natural Park, home to diverse wetland wildlife and hiking routes.
Things to know before you go
- Don’t forget to pack a bathing suit, beach towel, and reef-safe sunscreen for your day on Playa de Muro.
- Umbrellas and sun loungers can be rented on site, though facilities become sparser the further east you go; guests are welcome to bring their own picnics or parasols.
- Facilities include showers, changing rooms, public restrooms, and lifeguard stations.
- Wheelchair- and stroller-accessible boardwalks lead down to the sand at several spots along the beach
How to get there
The easiest way to get to this beach is by car, with paid parking available onsite. To get there via public transportation, take bus number 351 or A32 from Palma—both pass near Playa de Muro.
When to get there
Though it’s one of the biggest beaches on the Balearic Islands, Playa de Muro still gets crowded during high season, particularly in July and August. To have more sand to yourself, arrive on a weekday or visit during the spring or fall shoulder season.
What’s Nearby
There’s a lot to do in northern Mallorca, not far from Playa de Muro. Drive ten minutes north to the medieval walled town of Alcúdia to wander its narrow streets and stop in for a meal at one of its traditional restaurants. Or, head a bit further inland to Pollença, a town known for its large outdoor market held each Sunday.
Ways to explore
Playa de Muro is split into four sections: Sector 1 (or simply Playa de Muro), Sector 2 and 3 (both known as Sa Comu), and Sector 4 (aka Es Capellans). From Section 3, you can access S’Albufera National Park, a wetland area for walking, cycling, and bird-watching.
Beyond making sandcastles and swimming, the area is popular with photographers who come to stroll along the wooden footbridges on Sector 1 and 2. The wider beach is also busy with water sports fans on windy days. Kite surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and wind surfing are popular, and there are many equipment hire shops.
