Be sure to look for the bronze sculpture of Christ, which is submerged at a depth of 26 feet (8 meters). And don’t forget to try one of the local seafood dishes, such as ceviche, tiritas (fish strips), or pescadillas (crispy fish tacos).
Things to know before you go
- It may be difficult for people with reduced mobility to access Playa Las Gatas, especially when boarding the boat.
- If you swim near the reef, be sure to wear beach shoes, as the rocks are often very slippery.
- Travelers recommend arriving early. By noon the beach is usually packed.
How to get there
To get to Playa Las Gatas, you can take a water taxi across the Bay of Zihuatanejo; this is the most popular and convenient option. The boats run frequently and offer a scenic trip along the coastline. As another option, you can hike from town in about 20–30 minutes, following a well-marked trail to the beach. Guided tours also typically include round-trip transportation.
When to get there
The best time to visit Playa Las Gatas is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is sunny and warm and the ocean is calm, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Keep in mind that the rainy season (May to October) can bring occasional storms.
Playa La Ropa
Also in Zihuatanejo, Playa La Ropa is a picturesque, crescent-shaped beach that’s popular for swimming and water sports. Surrounded by lush hills, it offers stunning views, beachfront restaurants, and a relaxed vibe. According to legend, a galleon was once shipwrecked and its cargo of silks washed ashore on this beach, earning it the name “La Ropa,” which means clothes in Spanish.
