Playa Zicatela
Puerto Escondido, Mexico, 70934
At Playa Zicatela, arguably the country’s most famous surfing spot, the Mexican Pipeline creates some of Latin America’s best waves. This exhilarating swell should only be attempted by experienced surfers—the exceptionally strong currents can be dangerous for swimmers and beginners—but anyone can enjoy the golden sands, which are made for soaking up the sun of Oaxaca’s coastline.
The basics
If you’re just starting on your surfing journey, head to the southern end of Playa Zicatela, known as La Punta, where you’ll be able to enjoy calmer waves during small-group or private surf lessons. Some dolphin- and turtle-spotting cruises depart from Playa Zicatela, while horseback riding tours are also a popular way to explore it. The beach is backed by the traveler hot spot of Calle del Morro, where you can find a wealth of laid-back bars and backpackers.
Things to know before you go
There are plenty of surf shops along the beach where you can rent boards and wetsuits; only attempt the Pipeline if you’ve got ample experience.
Photographers often sit on the beach taking photographs of surfers; you can get digital copies of your shots for a small fee.
There are plenty of facilities behind the beach, including yoga studios, restaurants, and bars. You can also rent parasols and sun loungers on the sand.
How to get there
Playa Zicatela is in Puerto Escondido, along the Oaxacan coastline. The beach is only a 15-minute drive from the international airport and 15 minutes from the city center, which is inland, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) away.
When to get there
Playa Zicatela is always open. Many travelers come to Puerto Escondido during the dry season, starting in mid-December, but experienced surfers start heading there around May.
The best beach towns along Oaxaca’s coast
Puerto Escondido might be the best-known surf spot in Oaxaca, but the Mexican coastline is full of stunning seaside towns. The bohemian beach town of Mazunte is a small and serene alternative, while the lesser-known city of Huatulco offers a more authentic experience of the region’s culture.
