Playa Zoni (Zoni Beach)

Culebra, PR, 00775

Found along the northeastern coast of Culebra, a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, Playa Zoni (Zoni Beach) boasts the region's familiar white sands and clear waters. Since it’s less crowded than popular Flamenco Beach, visitors come here for a more peaceful setting. It's ideal for sunbathing or enjoying activities like beach volleyball, soccer, or tennis.

The basics

A popular day trip destination from mainland Puerto Rico, Culebra is beloved for its white sand beaches, coral reefs, and relaxed vibe. The island's Zoni Beach offers views of Cayo Norte, Culebrita Island, and St. Thomas. Catamaran tours to Culebra typically depart from Fajardo and include snorkeling at Flamenco Beach. If you arrive by air or sea, you can reach Zoni Beach by renting a Jeep or golf cart or by taking a taxi.

Things to know before you go

  • Unlike Flamenco Beach, Zoni Beach does not offer amenities such as bathrooms; you must pack your own refreshments and snacks.

  • Culebra is home to a few restaurants and small hotels for those who want to stay overnight.

  • Bring water shoes for the rocky areas of Zoni Beach.

  • There are no lifeguards at Zoni Beach.

How to get there

Culebra is 20 miles (32 kilometers) off the coast of Fajardo on the eastern side of Puerto Rico. The only way to get to the island is by ferry or small plane. Boats typically depart from Puerto Del Rey Marina in Fajardo. Once on Culebra, you’ll find plenty of taxis at the ferry terminal and airport to take you to Zoni Beach; it’s about a 20-minute drive from the ferry and about 15 minutes from the airport. Or you can rent a Jeep or golf cart to explore independently.

When to get there

Generally, the best time to visit Culebra is November through March. However, the waves at Zoni Beach can be rough in the winter, making swimming unsafe. The best time for swimming at Zoni Beach is between late spring and early fall, right after Puerto Rico’s busy winter. Turtle nesting season occurs between mid-April and June, so be on the lookout for sites and be careful not to disturb them.

Flamenco Beach

As the most popular beach on Culebra, Flamenco boasts amenities and services, including lifeguards, a camping area, showers, changing rooms and bathrooms, and vendors selling authentic Puerto Rican food. With few waves, the beach is ideal for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing. It’s also home to a unique attraction—The Tank, a remnant of the US Navy’s time on Culebra.
