POINT OF INTEREST

Plaza de América

Plaza América 3, Seville, Andalucia, 41013

Palm trees and fascinating architecture surround one of Seville’s most beautiful open-air plazas, Plaza de America. This Spanish square is a popular place for a leisurely stroll and people-watching from a bench. It is often included in walking tours focused on top city landmarks. The plaza is lined with some of Seville’s best museums featuring art, archaeology, and more.

The basics

Colorful tilework and views of architectural landmarks draw visitors to Plaza de America. First constructed for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, the square remains a central city gathering space. Visitors spend anywhere from 30 minutes to half a day here, going in and out of the museums that line the square. Those interested in just checking out the facades of the architecture can check out views during a bike tour of Seville or a ride on the hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus.

Things to know before you go

  • Plaza de America is a must-see landmark for architecture buffs and museum lovers.

  • The square is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

  • No reservations are required to visit this free landmark in Seville.

  • The square is famous for its white pigeons, which can be numerous (those with a fear of large numbers of birds may want to avoid parts of the plaza.)

How to get there

Plaza de America is located in the Parque de Maria Luisa, south of the park’s entrance, in Seville. Most visitors arrive on foot or as part of a sightseeing tour. The area is also well-served by public transportation, including bus stops along Paseo la Delicias. Street parking is minimal. The hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus is another option for transportation throughout Seville.

When to get there

This plaza is open during daylight hours. It’s a scenic place to relax over coffee or an impromptu afternoon picnic. Expect more bustle on the weekends and a quieter atmosphere on weekdays. The best time of year to visit Seville is from March through May when temperatures are mild; expect hotter temperatures and bigger crowds during the popular summer months.

Museum hop on the plaza

Many visitors travel to Plaza de America to go museum hopping. Three palaces on the square house a variety of museums and exhibitions. Visit them all or choose the museum that matches your interests. The three palaces here are the Royal Pavilion, the Museum of Popular Arts, and the Archaeological Museum, all built in different architectural styles.
