Plover Cove Reservoir

Shuen Wan, Hong Kong SAR, Hong Kong

Located within the Plover Cove Country Park, Plover Cove Reservoir is the second-largest reservoir in Hong Kong, and the first “reservoir in the sea” in the world. Part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, the area around the reservoir offers fantastic hiking and cycling, and is a popular destination for day trips.

The Basics

Most people visit Plover Cove Reservoir to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. There are hiking and bicycle paths around the reservoir, ranging from a flat stroll along the dam to challenging trails with steep climbs. Guided tours can be tailored for different ability levels.

Visitors also enjoy water sports in Tolo Harbor, on the other side of the reservoir dam; kayaking, sailing, and windsurfing are popular here. Bicycles, kayaks, dinghies, and windsurfing boards can all be rented nearby, and there are restaurants and barbecue areas around Tai Mei Tuk village, at the northwestern corner of the reservoir.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There is limited shade in the area, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

  • Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes, suitable for walking long distances or over uneven surfaces.

  • Some rental shops will allow you to drop off a bicycle at a different location.

  • Fishing is allowed in the reservoir from September to March with a fishing license.

How to Get There

Plover Cove Reservoir is located inside Plover Cove Country Park. By public transportation, take the MTR to Tai Po Station, then take bus 75K or 275R (Sundays and public holidays only) or a minibus 20C to Tai Mei Tuk. You can also take a taxi to Tai Mei Tuk.

When to Get There

Plover Cove Reservoir can be visited year-round. Some of the more challenging trails may be too arduous to attempt in the height of summer. The Tai Mei Tuk Water Sports Center, which rents out equipment, is closed Wednesday.

Engineering of the Plover Cove Reservoir

A feat of engineering, Plover Cove Reservoir was built by erecting a barrier across the mouth of the bay, then siphoning the seawater out and replacing it with fresh water. The Plover Cove Reservoir dam stretches for 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) and is the longest dam in Hong Kong.
