Ponta de São Lourenco
Estr. de São Lourenço, Madeira, Portugal, 9200-044
Ponta de São Lourenço is an arid peninsular at the easternmost tip of Madeira, from where the island’s volcanic origins are most evident. While it might not boast the lushness that characterizes most of Madeira, it offers exceptional views of the north and south coasts and the deep blue sprawl of the Atlantic Ocean.
The basics
Ponta de São Lourenco is accessible via road or a 4-mile (6-kilometer) out-and-back hiking trail. It’s of moderate difficulty due to its uneven terrain, however, the trail is well-marked and offers stunning views throughout the route. Nearly all sightseeing tours of eastern Madeira visit the lookout point, along with nearby highlights such as Pico do Arieiro mountain, one of the island’s highest peaks, and the Balcões lookout, where you’ll see lush green mountains in all their glory.
Things to know before you go
Due to a complete lack of vegetation, Ponta de São Lourenco is completely exposed to the elements; if hiking, bring sun protection and a windbreaker.
There’s a small entrance fee of €1 to access the trail. Residents and children under 12 don’t need to pay.
There are no shops or restaurants along the trail, so pack plenty of water and snacks.
How to get there
Ponta de São Lourenco is 20 miles (33 kilometers) from the capital of Funchal, which takes about 40 minutes to drive via the ER101 road. If you don’t have your own car, which is typically recommended for exploring Madeira, you can visit as part of a tour of the east side of the island.
When to get there
Madeira is known as the Island of Eternal Spring, thanks to its subtropical climate and year-round warm weather. July and August see higher temperatures and larger crowds, so visit from September through November for lovely weather without large groups of hikers.
The best lookout points in eastern Madeira
Ponta de São Lourenco might be one of Madeira’s most famous viewpoints, but there are many incredible spots for sweeping views on the island’s east side. Alternatives include Miradouro da Portela, from where you can see lush landscapes filled with wild hydrangeas and the Atlantic Ocean, and Pico do Facho, overlooking the bay of Machico.
