POINT OF INTEREST

Port Vell

Rambla de Mar, Barcelona, Spain, 08039

For centuries, Barcelona’s Port Vell was an industrial area, but that all changed in the 1990s. Today, this hip waterfront district has everything a traveler could ask for, from late-night seafood restaurants to shopping boutiques and endless waterfront views. Centrally located and easy to reach, this cauldron of culture, landmarks, and things to do is a must for any Barcelona itinerary.

The basics

Like so many old ports, Barcelona’s Port Vell—literally “old port”—is a story of reimagination: Dating back to the 1800s, this historic harbor was transformed into a vibrant leisure area for the 1992 Olympics. Decades later, it’s still picturesque, with a palm-lined promenade with views of the Mediterranean. Beyond strolling and people-watching, there are plenty of opportunities for shopping, dining at waterside restaurants, and visiting attractions such as the Barcelona Aquarium (L'Aquàrium Barcelona). The port seamlessly connects the waterfront to the Gothic Quarter, making it a perfect starting point for exploring the city.

Things to know before you go

  • Plenty of events are held at Port Vell, from Christmas markets to the America’s Cup.

  • Take the Miramar cable car for a fabulous view over the port.

  • Be careful with small kids near the water—the promenade doesn’t feature guard rails.

How to get there

To reach Port Vell, take the L3 (green line) metro to Drassanes or Barceloneta station, from where it’s a short walk to the water. From La Rambla, walk south until you reach the Columbus Monument and continue toward the marina. You can also board the Port Bus from other city attractions or take a casual 20-minute stroll from Barceloneta Beach.

When to get there

When to experience Port Vell depends on your interests. Some say it’s best visited in the early morning from 8am for better photos and smaller crowds. The lively atmosphere of summer evenings is fun too, with restaurants open until midnight. In general, avoid midday hours during July and August when temperatures and crowds peak, unless you’re there for an attraction, such as the aquarium.

Your speed, your style

Port Vell is proof of how many ways there are to explore Barcelona. If you’re short on time, explore the waterfront via a Segway or bike tour, or opt for a hop-on hop-off bus that will take you around the city at your leisure. Of course, if you’re looking for style, you could also take a trip on one of those yachts in the harbor—the water truly is the port’s best side.
