POINT OF INTEREST

Porta del Moll

Alcudia, Spain, 07400

One of only two surviving gates in the historic Old Town of Alcúdia, Porta del Moll is a striking sight with its crenelated towers and the distinctive palm trees that sit before it. It serves as the poster child for this town in northern Mallorca, hailed as one of the island’s most beautiful places.

The basics

While you can’t climb to the top of Porta del Moll, you can squeeze into some of the alcoves at the bottom of the wall, which presents a cute photo opportunity for kids. Porta del Moll is a staple of walking tours of Alcudía Old Town, which is also home to Església de Sant Jaume d'Alcúdia, famous for its opulent altar, and the Roman City of Pollentia archeological site, which attracts history buffs from across the globe.

Things to know before you go

  • The streets through and surrounding the gate are cobbled; while it may be bumpy, the surfaces shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for visitors with limited mobility.

  • There are a wealth of tapas restaurants near the gate, ideal for a chilled glass of sangria.

  • There’s no admission fee to visit Porta del Moll.

How to get there

Porta del Moll is 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) from the beachfront Port d’Acludía, a popular place to stay among travelers. It takes 25 minutes to walk, five minutes to drive, or 10 minutes on the 324 bus, which drops you off right outside of the gate.

When to get there

The best time to visit Alcudía is in spring (March-May) and fall (September-November). Summer is extremely crowded and can detract from the Old Town’s charming atmosphere. On Tuesdays and Sundays, the square surrounding Porta del Moll hosts a lively market, where you’ll find fresh produce and artisan crafts.

Highlights of Alcudía Old Town

Alcudía Old Town boasts hundreds of years of history, so it’s a fascinating place to explore on foot. As well as its church and archeological site, it’s also home to Camí de Ronda, medieval walls that you can walk on top of, and Carrer Major, a main street filled with bohemian boutiques and tapas restaurants.
