Powder Tower (Prasná Brána)
Namesti Republiky 5, Prague, Czech Republic, 110 00
The Powder Tower (Prasná Brána) is one of Prague’s last remaining city gates. It once formed part of the defensive walls that surrounded the city and was one of 13 gates that allowed people to pass in and out of the center. Visit to climb to the top of the tower and enjoy views over the surrounding area.
The Basics
The medieval Powder Tower played an important role in Prague’s history: The kings of Bohemia (as the Czech Republic was previously called) paraded through its gate on the way to their coronations at Prague Castle. The tower was built in the late 15th century and was known as the “new” tower, as it had replaced an earlier fortification. In the 18th century, the tower was used for gunpowder storage, which is why it is called the “powder” tower today.
Visit to admire the decorative reliefs on the exterior of the building, including images of the Bohemian kings, their coats of arms, and a series of angels with golden wings. For the best views, climb the 186 steps of the spiral staircase to the viewing gallery.

The Powder Tower is a very popular stop on guided tours of Prague.
The steep stone steps to reach the viewing gallery might not be suitable for people with limited mobility.
Visitors must purchase tickets to visit the viewing gallery, but Prague Card holders can enter for free.
