Presidential Palace
Jirón de la Unión s/n, Lima, Peru, 15001
One of the most important buildings in Lima’s Plaza Mayor is the Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno). The elegant palace, with lavish interiors and manicured gardens, holds 500 years of Peruvian history. Francisco Pizarro marked the city’s founding here in 1535, and today it houses the Peruvian government and presidential residence.
The Basics
The Government Palace is a great place to learn about Peru’s rich history, from the colonial period to the present day. Many Lima sightseeing tours stop at the palace to admire its beautiful exterior and architecture. To visit to the palace’s grand interiors, book a private tour or arrange through the public relations office, around the corner from the palace.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Government Palace is a must-see for architecture lovers and history buffs.
Entrance to the palace is free, but an appointment with the public relations office is required for access to the interior.
The changing of the guard ceremony occurs every day at noon in front of the palace.
How to Get There
The Government Palace is located on Plaza Mayor (formerly Plaza de Armas), in the heart of Lima. Take the El Metropolitano bus or the L1 metro line to the main square.
When to Get There
The palace is viewable from the outside 24/7, and interior tours are by appointment only—come in spring or early summer to see the beautifully manicured gardens in full bloom. Don’t miss the changing of the guard at noon daily. Lima experiences its peak season during the summer, December to April, so visit outside of this time for a quieter experience.
Home of the Incas
Before the Spanish ruled Peru, Inca chiefs resided in the area of Plaza Mayor. The site held strategic and spiritual meaning for the Incas, so Pizarro decided to make it the home of the first Spanish palace in Peru. This is also one reason why Lima’s nickname is City of the Kings; the other is that Pizarro founded the city on the Catholic holiday of Epiphany, when the Three Kings visited baby Jesus.
