Prickly Pear Island
Antigua, Antigua
This tiny islet off Antigua plays the part of an uninhabited island paradise to a T. Ringed by coral reefs with a white sandy beach, Prickly Pear Island gives visitors plenty of space to relax on lounge chairs while sipping tropical cocktails from the bar. Or, spend the afternoon snorkeling in its clear blue waters.
The basics
It’s a 10-minute boat ride to uninhabited Prickly Pear Island, which is just off the coast of Hodge Bay, Antigua. Most tours offer half- or full-day trips as there is no accommodation on the island. However, there’s plenty to keep you busy—many tours include the use of snorkeling equipment, or you can opt for total tropical relaxation and book a massage through the Prickly Pear Bar and Restaurant.
Things to know before you go
There are beach umbrellas available for rental, but the sun is fierce, so pack your sunscreen.
Order lunch before you’re hungry; the restaurant is excellent, but it has limited facilities.
If you’re interested in hiking or bird watching, book a tour ahead through the Prickly Pear Bar and Restaurant.
How to get there
Most tours of Prickly Pear Island depart from Hodge Bay, Antigua, as it’s a short boat ride away. You can choose between private rentals or a group tour, or opt for the shuttle operated by the restaurant. The shuttle departs from Sandy Ground Pier in the morning.
When to get there
The island's restaurant is closed for most of the day on Monday, but that may make for a quieter experience. Pack your own picnic and head out early to make the most of your time in paradise. Antigua is best visited during the dry season, which runs from December to April.
Captain your own craft
Prickly Pear Bar and Restaurant, which has been operating on the island for more than 20 years, offers kayak rentals from the island. Whether you want to head off solo or explore with a friend, spending the day circumnavigating the island is a fun alternative to snorkeling. Both double and single kayaks are available for rental.
