POINT OF INTEREST

Punda

Willemstad

Colorful Punda is in downtown Willemstad, where narrow colonial houses are painted in sweet candy shades. The historic district is an ideal spot to wander and see the sights and sounds of the island. From the street food vendors of the Old Market to the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue (the oldest surviving synagogue in the Americas), the neighborhood is full of culture.

Punda is a must-visit for any Curacao visitor—tours often include stops at the Old Market to sample Curacao dishes such as iguana stew and fried red snapper. Make a stop at Kon. Wilhelminapark to snap a picture in front of the huge Curacao sign, and continue to the Queen Emma Bridge. Expect vibrant street art, vendors hawking fresh fruit, and the smell of the nearby sea to surround you as you wander.

  • Bring plenty of water, and don’t forget your hat and sunscreen. Willemstad gets warm.

  • Bring cash to purchase souvenirs or shop from street vendors—many don't take cards.

  • Wear comfy footwear so you can enjoy your wander.

Punda is located in central Willemstad, to the east of the Queen Emma Bridge. Many visitors opt to stay in Punda to be near its restaurants and attractions. If you’re coming from outside the city, taxis and rental cars are easy to find on Curacao. Otherwise, check to see if your accommodation offers a shuttle service or is near a bus stop.

Avoid the middle of the afternoon when the sun and temperatures peak. Take a morning stroll and grab an early lunch at the Old Market, or opt for an evening visit and grab dinner at one of the restaurants by the waterfront. Curacao itself is best visited in the dry months from December to April.

Wander down Sha Caprileskade to find Punda’s floating market—vendors offer piles of fresh bananas, ripe mangoes, oranges, and more. It’s a glorious place to pick up tropical fruit, whether you’re grabbing a snack or planning a fruit salad for tomorrow's breakfast.
