Qiantang River Bridge
Binjiang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310053
One of Hangzhou’s most noteworthy landmarks, the Qiantang River Bridge is both an architectural and a historical highlight. The first modern steel bridge to be designed and constructed by Chinese engineers, the landmark has stood for upwards of 80 years. Today, the double-decker bridge serves pedestrians, trains, and vehicles.
The Basics
Commissioned in 1934 and designed by Mao Yifeng, the Qiantang River Bridge had a short early lease on life: though it debuted in 1937, it was blown up shortly after opening to halt advancing Japanese troops during World War II. Reopened to the public in 1953, it has served as a major thoroughfare ever since. Though not particularly aesthetically distinct, the bridge is nevertheless a major local landmark.
The Qiantang River Bridge is a popular stop on architecture tours of Hangzhou, and can be glimpsed during various sightseeing itineraries around the city.
