Queens Gardens
Hay Street, Perth, Western Australia, 6004
This East Perth park stands out from the rest with its replica Notting Hill bench (as seen in the movie), a Peter Pan statue signed by author J.M. Barrie, and lakes filled with water lilies and swans. Known for its picturesque scenery, the Queens Gardens are a popular spot for wedding ceremonies, picnics, and scenic strolls.
The basics
Named in honor of Queen Victoria for her Diamond Jubilee in 1899, the historic park offers a great break from sightseeing. Spanning 8.2 acres (3.3 hectares), it rarely gets overcrowded. Visitors can stroll around the scenic walking paths, enjoy a picnic by the lake, or stretch out on the grassy banks to read a book or admire the views. While some guided tours stop at Queens Gardens, most travelers opt to visit independently.
Things to know before you go
Perth’s WACA Ground is right next to the park, and the on-site WACA Museum makes a fun detour for cricket fans.
The Queens Gardens are free to visit and have restrooms, park benches, and a drinking fountain.
The park is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
The gardens are located in East Perth, about a 30-minute walk from downtown Perth. There is paid street parking surrounding the park, though finding parking during the week can be a bit of a challenge. Alternatively, you can take a Red CAT or Transperth bus to the gardens; CAT buses are free to ride. Taxis and rideshares are also available in Perth.
When to get there
The park is open around the clock, though it is an especially popular choice for locals on sunny afternoons. Come in the spring (September–November) or summer (December–February) when the colorful flower beds are in bloom, or in the fall (March–May) to admire the changing foliage.
Perth’s most beautiful parks and gardens
With beaches, vineyards, and national parks surrounding the city, it’s easy to get outdoors around Perth, but there are also plenty of parks and gardens to explore within the city limits. The largest in Perth is Kings Park and Botanic Garden, which has bushwalking trails, BBQ areas, and six children’s playgrounds. Also along the banks of the Swan River are Sir James Mitchell Park, Langley Park, and Richardson Park. Heirisson Island, meanwhile, is known for its herd of free-roaming kangaroos.
