Queensland Maritime Museum
412 Stanley St., South Brisbane, Brisbane, Queensland, 4101
As an island nation, Australia and its people have a long history with the ocean. At the Queensland Maritime Museum, the shining hull of Ella’s Pink Lady is a testament to the unstoppable willpower of the youngest-ever solo circumnavigator, the Australian Jessica Watson. Explore dozens of boats, exhibits, and incredibly detailed model ships as you delve into the stories of adventurous Australian sailors and seafarers.
The basics
Located on the banks of the Brisbane River, the museum is an immersive experience as you discover the variety of crafts that have impacted Australian maritime history. Some don’t even appear seaworthy—the gunmetal-grey Happy II measures just nine feet long and is one of the smallest boats ever to cross the Pacific Ocean. It’s the perfect family destination, inviting kids to explore and learn with adults.
Things to know before you go
As many exhibits are outside, check the weather before you go and always slather on extra sunscreen.
While most of the museum is accessible to all visitors, certain areas are accessible only by stairs.
Check the website beforehand, as the museum often hosts exciting events and activities.
How to get there
The museum is located in the South Bank district of Brisbane, overlooking the river. It’s easily accessible by all forms of public transit, but to keep with the maritime theme, opt for a ferry ride from downtown—catch the public ferry from North Quay 2 and debark at the Maritime Museum ferry terminal.
When to get there
The museum is typically open from Wednesday to Sunday and closes in the afternoon. Opt for a morning visit so you can wander around the open-air exhibits before the heat of the day peaks and more visitors start to arrive.
Inspired by true events
After touring the model interior of Ella’s Pink Lady to discover what it would have been like for teen sailor Jessica Watson to live onboard for 210 days during her nonstop circumnavigation, watch the movie True Spirit. The 2023 film chronicles Watson’s challenges and triumphs and helps bring the museum exhibit to life.
