Queensland Museum

Queensland Cultural Centre, Brisbane, Queensland, 4101

With exhibitions focusing on natural history, anthropology, and cultural heritage; the Queensland Museum is a celebration of everything that makes Queensland unique. Fun and engaging for all ages, it’s crammed with interactive exhibitions, while the adjoining Sciencentre offers a hands-on approach to discovering science.

The basics

Leave yourself plenty of time to browse the permanent and temporary exhibitions at the Queensland Museum. There’s something to interest all tastes, whether it's marveling over ancient artifacts, following the journey of the ANZAC soldiers through WWI, or learning all about Aussie animals from koalas to tarantulas at the Discovery Centre. Kids can let off some steam at the ENERGEX Playasaurus Place, which has dinosaur-themed play areas and interactive sustainable energy exhibits, or dive into science experiments at the Sciencentre SparkLab. General admission to the museum is free, but some exhibitions such as the SparkLab require tickets.

Things to know before you go

  • Queensland Museum is one of the most visited attractions of Brisbane’s Cultural Precinct and a popular choice for families with kids.
  • The museum has a cafe and a gift shop.
  • Queensland Museum is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible.

How to get there

Queensland Museum is located in the Cultural Centre Precinct along Brisbane’s South Bank. It’s roughly a 10-minute walk from downtown Brisbane, across the Victoria Bridge or the Kurilpa footbridge. The closest train station is South Brisbane, while CityCat ferries dock at the South Bank Ferry Terminal—both about a 5-minute walk away.

When to get there

The museum can get busy on summer weekends so make an early start and visit timed attractions such as the SparkLab first to avoid waiting in line. An atmospheric time to visit is during the annual World Science Festival in March, when the museum hosts a number of different events.

Brisbane’s Cultural Precinct

A cluster of museums, galleries, and cultural centers make up the Brisbane Cultural Precinct. After browsing the exhibitions at the Queensland Museum, admire the city’s most impressive art collections at the Queensland Art Gallery and the GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art), or attend a show at the Queensland Cultural Centre or Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Afterwards, a stroll around the South Bank affords views of the Wheel of Brisbane and the landmark BRISBANE sign, or you can head to the Streets Beach lagoon for a swim.
