Quinta do Canhoto
Estr. dos Brejos, Albufeira, Portugal, 8200-316
A strikingly modern winery in the heart of the Algarve wine region, Quinta do Canhoto is a chic destination for wine tasting within easy reach of Albufeira. It specializes in Esquerdino red, white, and rosé wines made using grape varieties including antão vaz, arinto, touriga nacional, syrah, Alicante bouschet, and cabernet sauvignon.
The basics
You can explore the family-owned Quinta do Canhoto on a 2.5-hour guided tour. The experience includes a tour of the vineyards and the production areas to learn more about how wine is made, plus a tasting session accompanied by a charcuterie board featuring local cured meat and cheese. Following the tour, you can stay in the tasting area to purchase more drinks while enjoying countryside views. You can also upgrade to include a full lunch rather than just snacks.
Things to know before you go
The winery has a shop where you can buy bottles of wine to take home with you; they can also arrange shipping.
You need to book your tour in advance via a tour operator or on the winery’s official website.
The winery accepts both cash and credit cards.
How to get there
Quinta do Canhoto is a 10-minute drive from Albufeira via Av. de Correeira. If you’re going to be indulging in wine, you can take bus number 10 or 11 from central Albufeira and disembark at the Torre da Mosqueira stop, just a 3-minute walk from the winery. Rideshare apps are also widely available in the Algarve.
When to get there
Quinta do Canhoto offers tasting tours from Monday through Friday; the winery is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Tours typically begin at lunchtime and last 2.5 hours. While booking in advance is always advisable, it’s strongly recommended during the peak summer season of June through September.
The highlights of the Algarve countryside
Quinta do Canhoto features on several Algarve safari tours, which typically transport you in a Jeep so you can get off-road and experience the region’s lush interior landscapes, which are blanketed in olive and orange groves, and dotted with lemon and avocado trees. Many excursions include wine tasting, a visit to a cork tree orchard, and a trip to a traditional Algarvian village such as Paderne.
