Reach Falls

Manchioneal, Jamaica

Tucked away in the inland jungle of Portland Parish, within easy reach of Port Antonio, Reach Falls is often named one of Jamaica’s most beautiful waterfalls. Surrounded by verdant rainforest, the cascading falls lead to a sparkling emerald pool beneath, where you can swim, explore underwater caves, or simply relax.

The basics

You can visit Reach Falls by joining a tour leaving from Port Antonio, Kingston, or Ocho Rios. Most tours include transportation and admission fees, while a guide will help you navigate the falls and its highlights, such as the Rabbit Hole jump point, which you slide down into a pool below, and underwater caves. Tours typically spend around 1–2 hours at the falls, allowing time to explore the area around the cascade and swim, while some include the chance to spot some of the diverse wildlife in the rainforest, too.

If visiting independently, either by self-drive or if arriving by taxi, be aware that guides in the area might offer you a “local tour”—these tours don’t visit the falls themselves, but take you to smaller waterfalls and pools close by.

Things to know before you go

  • You can pay for your entry tickets using either US dollars or Jamaican dollars.

  • Bring sun protection, a swimsuit, and a towel. The rocks can be slippery, so water shoes might be useful.

  • There’s a picnic area at the base of the falls.

How to get there

Reach Falls is located on the eastern end of Jamaica in the Portland Parish, not far from the A4 motorway that wraps around the island. It's about one hour by car from Port Antonio, depending on traffic, and 2.5 hours from Kingston. If you don’t have a rental car, consider a tour that includes transportation.

When to get there

Reach Falls is typically open throughout the year Wednesday to Sunday—closed on Mondays and Tuesdays—from morning until late afternoon. It's open on most public holidays, no matter what day of the week, except for Christmas Day and Good Friday. If you want to avoid crowds, arrive first thing in the morning on a weekday.

Visiting Dunn’s River Falls

If you're staying in Montego Bay, you may want to consider skipping Reach Falls and visiting Dunn's River Falls instead. While usually more crowded, the much closer waterfall features a series of stepped cascades that tumble into a main pool. Daring travelers can join a human chain of guides and other visitors to climb to the top.
