The 195,819-acre (79,245-hectare) Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada comprises a network of narrow canyons, seasonal waterfalls, rock art sites, and surreal rock formations with ample opportunity for hiking, biking, rock climbing, and desert wildlife watching, all a short drive from Las Vegas.

With its red rocks and its abundance of outdoor activities, the canyon feels like it’s a world away from Las Vegas. Rock climbers conquer the 3,000-foot (914-meter) red sandstone walls of Keystone Thrust, while mountain bikers take on Mustang Trail. Optimal views come from Red Rock Canyon Overlook and the 13-mile (21-kilometer) scenic drive through the Mojave Desert. Because Red Rock National Conservation Area covers such a sizable swathe of desert, it's home to many natural attractions. The Calico Hills are one of the park's most famous sites, accessible via a moderate hiking trail. Spot old agave roasting pits from Native American history along the Calico Tanks Trail, while Willow Springs boasts petroglyphs. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, adjacent to Red Rock Canyon, was once a working ranch owned by millionaire Howard Hughes.

There are lots of things to do at Red Rock Canyon. You can take the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive or go hiking on one of its 26 different trails. You can also stop at the overlooks for views or go rock climbing. If you’re interested in history, check out the petroglyphs and learn about Paiute culture at the visitor center.

The Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive (also known as the Red Rock Canyon Loop) takes around 30 minutes to drive. If you plan to stop frequently, give yourself plenty of extra time. The entire 13-mile (20-kilometer) stretch goes along Red Rock Canyon Road and is accessible throughout the year.

Hiking boots or walking or running shoes are really important at the canyon, especially if you’re planning to hit the trails. Wear long pants and long sleeves with UV protection to guard your skin from the sun’s harsh rays and the area’s prickly plant life.
