Kala Ghoda, Fort, Mumbai, Maharashtra, 400001
At the edge of the Colaba Causeway in southern Mumbai, Regal Circle (SP Mukherjee Chowk) is a busy intersection with a Victorian fountain at its center. Next to it is the art deco Regal Cinema, an active cinema hall that dates back to the early 1930s, and the whole area is surrounded by historical Raj-era buildings, restaurants, art galleries, and shops.
The Basics
Regal Circle gets its name from the adjacent art deco Regal Cinema. The building was constructed in the 1930s, and the first film screened here was Laurel and Hardy'sThe Devil's Brother, in 1933. Many Mumbai walking tours pass by Regal Circle and the cinema, and going with a guide is the best way to understand the history of the area.
Things to Know Before You Go
Regal Circle is a must-visit for history lovers and architecture fans.
The circle and its surrounding area are best explored on foot, so wear comfortable footwear.
Sunscreen is a good idea year-round, and you should bring an umbrella during the monsoon months (roughly June–September).
How to Get There
Regal Circle is located at the top of the Colaba Causeway in southern Mumbai. The area is well connected by road and public transportation, and it's easy to hail taxis here. The intersection is a 5-minute walk from the Gateway of India and about 15 minutes on foot from the Churchgate Railway Station.
When to Get There
If you want to get good photos and avoid crowds and heat, it's best to visit Regal Circle first thing in the morning. However, the people watching in the area is better in the early evening, and the whole area stays busy well into the night, particularly on days when the Regal Cinema is screening popular new films.
The Wellington Fountain
At the heart of Regal Circle stands the Wellington Fountain, a stone fountain dating to 1865. Its base sits inside a basin that measures around 37 feet (11 meters) in diameter and features an octagonal column displaying inscriptions and bas relief figures commemorating the Duke of Wellington's victories, notably in the Mysore and Maratha wars.
