Reynolds Square
32 Abercorn St., Savannah, Savannah, GA, 31401
One of Savannah's 22 historic squares, Reynolds Square was one of the city's first six squares and a center point for the colonial government. Built in 1734, it was renamed from Lower New Square to honor the first Royal Governor of Georgia, John Reynolds. The leafy square contains a bronze statue of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.
The basics
Brick pavers and shady live oaks make Reynolds Square one of the prettiest of Savannah’s 22 remaining city squares. It’s surrounded by historic buildings, including the Oliver Sturges House, Lucas Theatre For the Arts, and The Olde Pink House. The square also has a monument to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, where it’s believed his home once stood. The area surrounding Reynolds Square is pedestrian friendly.
Follow the crowd, literally, by booking one of Savannah's many historical walking tours, pub crawls, or self-guided ghost tours. If you’d rather DIY your own walking tour, start at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum and walk east down Congress Street where you’ll pass multiple squares, including Reynolds Square, before arriving at Historic Fort Wayne at the road's end.
Things to know before you go
Open container laws allow you to responsibly sip an alcoholic drink in Reynolds Square.
The free DOT shuttle has a stop in front of Reynolds Square.
There’s a free public restroom available in the Bryan Street Parking Garage beside the square.
How to get there
Reynolds Square is located at 32 Abercorn Street in the north Historic District. With the popular River Street three blocks away, you’ll likely visit the square on foot. If you want to hop straight from your car to the square, Congress Street and Bryan Street each have a parking garage adjacent to Reynolds Square. There’s also a parking garage one block east of the square on Lincoln Square.
When to get there
Reynolds Square is a public gathering place with no set hours, so you’re free to visit around the clock. Tourists are often out late around this area of the Historic District, but it’s not advised to hang out at the park after local businesses have closed for the night. Instead, experience it during the day before a performance at Lucas Theatre For the Arts or before dinner at The Olde Pink House.
A sweet treat in the Square
Leopold’s Ice Cream is a 2-minute walk from Reynolds Square. This must-try on any visit to Savannah has been a staple since 1919. The old-school interior design is a callback to the shop's soda fountain roots and a fun place to lick a scoop. However, when the lines get lengthy, you don’t need to wait around for an empty table. Take your scoop of famous Tutti Frutti ice cream to a bench in Reynolds Square.
