Rhine Tower (Rheinturm)

Stromstraße 20, Düsseldorf, Rhine River, 40221

The Rhine Tower, at 789 feet (234 meters) high, is one of Düsseldorf’s tallest buildings and a defining feature of the city skyline. Visitors take a high-speed elevator to the top of the telecommunications tower, which has an observation deck and a revolving restaurant, both offering scenic views of the Old Town and Rhine riverfront.

The basics

Given its dominant position overlooking Düsseldorf, it's hard to miss this prominent landmark when exploring the city on foot. To get a glimpse of the Rhine Tower from afar and learn about its history at the same time, it can be seen on a variety of sightseeing tours, including hop-on, hop-off bus tours, Segway tours, and walking tours. Alternatively, to go up the tower, it’s easy to plan an independent visit to the observation deck and restaurant.

Things to know before you go

  • The tower is not stroller-accessible, and wheelchair users require an accompanying person in order to enter the observation deck or restaurant level.

  • Children can enter for free, and senior citizen discounts are available.

  • If you plan to visit multiple attractions in the city, it’s worth looking into a Düsseldorf Card, which provides discounted entry.

  • Don’t miss the light sculpture on the tower, which acts as one of the world’s largest digital clocks.

  • If you’re celebrating, the Rhine Tower’s restaurant has special dining packages available, so it’s worth doing some research and planning your visit in advance.

How to get there

Next to the Rhine River, at the entrance of the Media Harbor on Stromstrasse 20, the Rhine Tower can easily be reached by public transportation. Take tram #706, #708, or #709 to D-Landtag/Kniebrücke, which is about a 5-minute walk away from the tower. If you’d like to drive, there is parking available on-site, but fees apply.

When to get there

The Rhine Tower is open daily, usually from mid-morning until before midnight. It’s best to visit on a clear day, since the tower sometimes offers views as far as Cologne Cathedral and the Bergisches Land mountain range. To beat the crowds, visit first thing in the morning. Or, for great daytime views, followed by seeing the city illuminated after dark, head to the tower around sunset.

Food and drink options at the Rhine Tower

Instead of just visiting the panoramic deck, many travelers go to the Rhine Tower for its atmospheric dining and nightlife. Visit Bar & Lounge M 168 for pastries, snacks, drinks, and in the evening—a cocktail menu. You can also enjoy modern Japanese fusion dishes and a revolving restaurant experience at QOMO.
