Richardson Ocean Park
Hilo, Big Island of Hawaii
Practically in the shadow of Hilo International Airport, Richardson Ocean Park—aka Richardson Beach—is the closest black-sand beach to the island’s biggest city. Popular with locals and visitors, this easy-access spot offers excellent snorkeling and swimming for all ages, plenty of amenities, and fabulous ocean views along every inch of soft, dark sand.
The basics
Richardson Ocean Park is one in a series of small-ish beach parks on Hilo’s east side. From afar, the craggy, black volcanic rocks make it look wild, but gentle tide pools, a calm current, and an in-flow of spring water make this a fabulous spot for snorkeling and swimming, even for kids. Bring the whole family—there are grassy picnic areas, restrooms, and lifeguards on duty for a fun day in the sand near town.
Things to know before you go
There is no entrance fee to visit and explore Richardson Ocean Park. While the park has amenities like restrooms and showers, there is no rental facility—bring your own snorkeling and swimming gear. The park is usually open daily from 7am to 7pm.
How to get there
Richardson Ocean Park is just a few minutes drive from downtown Hilo. Drive along Kalanianaole Avenue, heading east until the road ends at the park. The park offers free parking, though the lot can fill up, especially on weekends. For public transportation, consider the Hele-On Bus or nab a taxi or rideshare.
When to get there
The best time to visit Richardson Ocean Park is in the morning when the waters are calm, visibility for snorkeling is optimal, and the crowds haven’t yet arrived. On weekends, the park can be especially crowded; to guarantee a parking spot and plenty of elbow room, visit early in the morning on a weekday.
The mystique of green sand
Hawaii’s green-sand beach is difficult, especially now that the state has prohibited unsanctioned ATV rides. Instead of trekking in the hot sun to the island’s famous green-sand beach, take a closer look at Richardson Ocean Park, which is technically 2-toned: Green olivine crystals make up a portion of the sand.
