POINT OF INTEREST

River Arts District

River Arts District, Asheville, North Carolina

Once an abandoned track of warehouses along a destitute stretch of Asheville’s French Broad River, the River Arts District (RAD) has transformed into a hotbed for artists and budding businesses. There is a vast array of studios where you can see artists working on creative projects ranging from photography and painting to basketry and pottery.

You can wander the streets of the RAD on your own, or stop by on a hop-on hop-off trolley tour that lets you set your own pace and explore the galleries at your leisure. Visitors who are inspired by the River Arts District’s creative community and dynamic art galleries can take part in an art workshop, watch hands-on demonstrations, and get to know local artists while learning about individual creative processes.

  • The RAD is the perfect place for creative visitors to spend a day in Asheville.
  • Wear layers and comfortable walking shoes—the studios are spread out and parking is limited so you are likely to spend some time walking between locations.xa0
  • An interactive online map (also available at most locations within the district) makes it easy to find your way around the neighborhood and pick which studios to visit.
  • Pick out local arts and crafts to take home and most locations can ship it for you so you don’t have to haul it around for the rest of your trip.

Accessible from many different streets in Asheville, the RAD is marked with bright yellow sandwich boards on street corners leading to the district. You can visit by car (parking is free), hop on the trolley, or take the W1 or W2 buses serving the district.

While many studios and shops are open daily, if you want to see the district at its liveliest, visit on Saturdays—especially the second Saturday of the month, when you can find additional demonstrations, refreshments, and festivities. If you are in the area in the fall, head to the RAD for the Annual Fall Studio Stroll (held the second weekend of November).

The River Arts District is not all art galleries and studios—you can also find farm-fresh eateries and some of the best beer in town. Tap into a different kind of art at the local-favorite microbrewery, Wedge Brewing Company. Located at The Wedge Studios, it's a place where you can enjoy a beer while surrounded by art, games, food trucks, and local artisans.
