POINT OF INTEREST

Roberson Museum and Science Center

30 Front St., Binghamton, NY, 13905

Housed within the historic Roberson Mansion—a grand, Italian Renaissance-style landmark built by turn-of-the-century industrialist Alonzo Roberson, Jr.—Binghamton, New York’s Roberson Museum and Science Center is today one of the region’s highlight museums. Home to temporary and permanent exhibitions on history, art, and science, it is mainly celebrated for its sizeable digital planetarium, which hosts regular celestial shows.

The basics

As much a destination for its National Historic Register-certified architecture as it is for its diversity of exhibitions, the Roberson Museum and Science Center draws families and visitors across Upstate New York.

Visitors come to take in exhibitions on subjects ranging from local Native American history, ecology, space rocks, and local artists. They also frequent the museum for its more interactive experiences, from its planetarium shows to Clayworks, a modern pottery studio in the historic home’s renovated carriage house. Whatever the itinerary, the museum’s convenient (and scenic) riverside location in central Binghamton makes exploring easy.

Things to know before you go

  • Children aged 4 and under can visit the museum for free, while seniors and students receive discounted entry.

  • The museum is fully wheelchair-accessible, making two wheelchairs available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Don’t miss the museum’s first-floor Model Train Room: It’s home to the largest model train in the region.
