Roque Nublo (Cloud Rock is a lofty, 262-foot (80-meter rock formation that was formed millions of years ago during a volcanic eruption. Located in Nublo Rural Park (Parque Rural del Nublo, the landmark is the island’s second-highest peak after Pico de la Nieves.

Roque Nublo is said to be one of the world’s largest natural volcanic crags. Considered a sacred landmark by the island’s Indigenous people, Roque Nublo and the smaller Roque de la Rana are popular day trip destinations for hikers. The 3-mile (5-kilometer) trail leads you past dams and historic villages.

Things to know before you go
*The hike to Roque Nublo is steep in places and therefore best suited to those with a good level of fitness. *Because the hiking trail is exposed, it recommended to take a hat, sunscreen, and water bottles, and to wear sturdy hiking shoes. *Note that the temperature at Roque Nublo is much cooler than at ground level; layers are recommended, particularly during the winter months. *You can spot local wildlife such as eagles and, on clear days, see Mt. Teide on Tenerife—the Canaries’ highest peak—in the distance.
How to get there
Roque Nublo is located in Gran Canaria’s center. From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, it’s a 1-hour drive via the GC-15 to GC-600; from the highway, it’s a 1-mile (1.5-kilometer) hike to the rock formations.
When to get there
A nighttime visit to Roque Nublo (Cloud Rock) is perfect for stargazers. For a calmer experience, avoid visiting in summer or during bank holidays and weekends, or time your trip for early morning or evening to miss the bulk of the crowds.
Pico de las Nieves
In addition to the Roque Nublo, Pico de las Nieves is another hiking hotspot. Measuring 6,394 feet (1,949 metres), the mountain also has volcanic origins. Head to the Pico de los Pozos de la Nieve Viewpoint by car for the best views of the island; even on cloudy days, you can see to Mt. Teide on Tenerife and more above the clouds.
