POINT OF INTEREST

Rosecliff

584 Bellevue Ave., Newport, Rhode Island

One of the most recognizable mansions on Newport’s ritzy Bellevue Avenue, Rosecliff perfectly preserves the Gilded Age. Built around 1900 for Theresa Fair Oelrichs, a Nevada silver heiress, it was constructed specifically for parties—think The Great Gatsby, which is fitting, considering the 2013 film adaptation was in part filmed here. Today, the Versailles-esque mansion welcomes the public to explore its interior and historic rose gardens.

You’ll get a slice of silver-heiress life on one of the mansion’s self-guided audio tours, which you can access on your personal device with the Newport Mansions app—be sure to bring headphones. Tours last up to 90 minutes, though you’re welcome to explore as quickly or as leisurely as you like, basking in the crimsons, golds, and creamy hues. Don’t miss the largest private ballroom in Newport, a heart-shaped staircase, views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Ample parking is available at Rosecliff, though bus tours save you the hassle of finding a space. You can see the mansion along Newport’s famous Cliff Walk as well.
  • Check before visiting to make sure the facility is open during your visit.
  • Bring a set of headphones to listen to the audio tour on your smartphone. If you don’t have a set, ask for a printed script, or simply ask the staff questions as you need.

Most travelers will visit Rosecliff via personal vehicle or bus tour—there’s ample parking for vehicles of all lengths (Theresa needed room for her guests’ carriages, after all). You can also access Rosecliff from Newport’s famous 3.5-mile (6-kilometer) Cliff Walk, using Belmont Beach and Marine Avenue to approach from the coast.

Plan your trip for after September 1, 2023—Rosecliff and its Gilded Age siblings closed during the COVID-19 pandemic and are some of the last museums to reopen. Once you’ve settled on an open day, try to come around opening time (typically 10am) to avoid the buses, tour groups, and growing crowds.

Rosecliff overlooks Sheep Point Cove, with the beautiful (but rocky) Belmont Beach below. This beach is open to the public, is often empty, and connects to the Cliff Walk. To the north you’ll find The Breakers; to the south, you’ll find the Marble House—both are spectacular Gilded Age gems that rival Rosecliff in opulence. If you can, plan a separate day to take in this stretch of the Cliff Walk and its exquisite views.
