POINT OF INTEREST

Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive

Ross Maxwell Scenic Dr, Big Bend National Park, TX, 79834

Big Bend National Park boasts more than hiking trails—scenic driving routes lace the park, with none more spectacular than Ross Maxwell, a curvy 30-mile (50-kilometer) stretch showcasing the region’s renowned geological features. A journey along the road takes you past sights including historic districts, vista points and overlooks, canyons, volcanic rock formations, and the Chisos Mountains.

The basics

The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive skirts the western edge of the Chisos Mountains in the heart of Big Bend National Park. From the turnoff at Panther Junction Road, it runs along the western slopes of the mountains to the Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead across the Rio Grande from the US-Mexico Border.

One hour of driving is enough to complete the route. Still, you’ll need more time to stop at overlooks and points of interest, such as the abandoned Sam Nail Ranch and the Castolon Historic District.

Things to know before you go

  • The route is fully paved.

  • There’s a shop at the Castolon Historic District where you can pick up snacks and supplies.

  • Bring hiking shoes and enough water to hit the short hiking trails.

  • The scenic drive is open to all park visitors, but entering the park requires paying admission.

  • Download an offline map, as cell service can be intermittent.

  • Find restrooms at the Castolon Ranger Station and the Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead.

How to get there

From the Panther Junction Visitor Center, follow the signed route west along Panther Junction Road and Gana Springs Road, and turn south on the scenic route. Parking is available at several viewpoints along the route. On reaching Santa Elena Canyon, you can take the gravel Maverick Road to the park’s western gate or backtrack on the paved drive.

When to get there

The drive is open year-round. Big Bend is best visited from late fall to early spring when temperatures are typically mild. Winter offers pleasant weather, frequent ranger programs, and more activities from local outfitters, while summer temperatures can be extreme, with reduced services and fewer outdoor opportunities.

Where to stop along Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive

There are enough viewpoints and interesting pit stops along Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive for a full-day road trip. Don’t miss the Sotol Vista Overlook, which offers unbeatable views over the west side of Big Bend National Park; the Castolon Historic District, with a visitor center, camp store, and campground; and the magnificent Santa Elena Canyon at the end of the route, where you can follow a hiking trail along the Rio Grande and down to the canyon floor.
