Rundle Mall
Adelaide, South Australia, 5000
Adelaide’s shopping epicenter—Rundle Mall—is home to over 700 retail stores and four department stores, plus food, sculptures, and, often, street performers. The original Rundle Street was an Adelaide shopping favorite as far back as the 1870s and Rundle Mall’s Victorian arcades preserve its historic charm.
The basics
As well as the usual international brands, Rundle Mall shopping highlights include Australian opal jewelry, local chocolate brand Haigh’s Chocolates; and David Jones, Australia’s high-end department store chain. Sculptures including The Mall’s Balls offer great photography potential and many walking tours stop by, as does the occasional food tour. In festival season and around Christmas, the stage in Gawler Place hosts live performances.
Things to know before you go
- Australian retail prices can often be higher than in the US and Europe. Compare costs against your home country before buying international brands.
- Adelaide serves free Wi-Fi across the city center. Most Rundle Mall department stores and arcades offer their own free Wi-Fi too.
- Adelaide is a flat city and Rundle Mall is wheelchair-accessible.
How to get there
One block back from North Terrace in the heart of Adelaide, Rundle Mall is easy to reach. It’s a 5-minute walk around the block from Adelaide Railway Station, while the free City Connector bus services (#98A, #98C, #99A, and #99C) stop nearby.
When to get there
Rundle Mall (and most retailers) typically open from morning until early evening during the week. It’s advisable to check opening hours before visiting as times can vary, and there may be reduced opening hours at the weekend. For people-watching, visit on Friday evening or Saturday afternoon; for a more peaceful shopping experience, come during the working week. Check for free shows during festival season.
Rundle Street
During the 1970s, the western end of Rundle Street was converted into Rundle Mall, but the east end is not pedestrianized and Rundle Street East makes an interesting alternative for indie shoppers. Quiet laneways house vintage boutiques and local designers, as well as bars, cafés, and the Palace Nova Cinema, while the street itself offers enviable design.
