Salitre Mágico
Avenida Calle 63 No. 60-80, Bogota, Colombia
On the northern tip of Bogota's sprawling Simón Bolívar Metropolitan Park, this popular theme park features about 40 rides and attractions that run the gamut from toddler-friendly merry-go-rounds to thrilling roller coasters. You'll also find other distractions here, from carnival games to food carts.
The basics
If you like rides, you'll have plenty to keep you busy at the park, from the Magnus roller coaster, which features corkscrew-type loops and reaches speeds of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour, to a massive Ferris wheel offering spectacular views over the capital. There’s also a splash ride, a haunted house, bumper cars, and gentle attractions such as a miniature train and a double-story play structure.
Things to know before you go
Parents with smaller kids take note: many of the rides here have minimum height restrictions.
The park is wheelchair accessible, but the rides are not. A limited number of wheelchairs and strollers are available for rent.
If you're worried about rain, you can purchase "rain insurance," which will allow you to postpone your visit to a drier day.
You won't be allowed to bring food into the park, but there are two food courts where you can buy fast food, soft drinks, and ice cream.
How to get there
Salitre Mágico is set on the northern end of the massive Simón Bolívar Metropolitan Park, just off Carrera 68. Public buses stop right in front of the main entrance, though most visitors prefer to rely on taxis or rideshare vehicles to get around the city. If you’re coming by car from the historic La Candelaria neighborhood, give yourself at least 45 minutes to get to the park.
When to get there
The best time to visit the park is between December and February, when the chance of rain is at its lowest. That said, the weather in Bogota can be unpredictable, and downpours do happen even in the traditionally dry month of January. Park opening hours and dates vary throughout the year. Up-to-date information is posted on the park's website at least a month in advance.
Maloka Museum
If you're visiting Bogota with children in tow, don't miss the Maloka Museum, a short drive from Salitre Mágico. This popular museum focuses on teaching kids about science and technology in a fun and interactive way, and features all sorts of hands-on exhibits, a cinema, and a virtual reality experience.
