Salthill Promenade
Unnamed Road, Galway, Ireland
Lining 1.8 miles (three kilometers) of Galway Bay, Ireland’s Salthill Promenade offers beautiful seaside views from the Claddagh Quay to the Blackrock Diving Board. The stroll along the paved promenade doesn’t take long, so many Galway visitors easily fit this memorable experience into their visit.
The basics
Most travelers who want to enjoy the Salthill Promenade walk down it on their own schedule, but you can find tours that take you to Galway and Salthill on the same day. Some Galway hop-on hop-off tours will stop in Salthill, too. If you’re visiting the promenade on your own instead of on a tour, park at the free car park at the attraction and stroll the paved promenade at your own pace.
Things to know before you go
The Salthill Promenade can be crowded and windy, so make sure you’re ready to brace both when you walk it.
The Galway Atlantaquaria is a short walk from the promenade and a great thing to do afterward since it’s easy to enjoy in any weather.
There are two free parking areas near the Salthill Promenade. One is near Galway Aquarium and the other is at the end of the promenade.
How to get there
Most visitors like to visit by car, rideshare service, or on a tour; however, you can walk, bike, and take the bus from Galway city center, too. To take the bus, hop on Bus Eireann’s route 401 from Galway’s Eyre Square. If you’re walking, start at The Claddagh and head toward Nimmo's Pier.
When to get there
For better weather near the seaside, the best times to visit the Salthill Promenade are from April through August, but there are also more crowds during the summertime. Since the walkway is open 24 hours a day, dawn and early morning are ideal if you don’t mind the colder weather.
Grab a meal at the Salthill Hotel
After walking the Salthill Promenade, carve out time in your schedule to sit down for a meal or a drink at the Salthill Hotel. You can enjoy a meal at the Prom Restaurant or a drink at the Blackrock Bar within the hotel. For an extra special experience, request a table or seat by a window with views of Galway Bay.
