Saluhallen Market

Kungstorget, Gothenburg, Sweden, 411 17

Gothenburg’s biggest and most popular indoor food market is the buzzing epicenter of the city’s culinary scene. Housed in a 19th-century, barrel-roofed building designed by Swedish architect Hans Hedlund, the Saluhallen Market Hall (Stora Saluhallen) is brimming with artisan produce, lively restaurants, and old-fashioned charm.

The basics

Saluhallen Market Hall has over 40 independent shops, stalls, and restaurants. Here, you can purchase organic, locally sourced, and seasonal products, including cheeses, olives, fresh and dried fruits, herbs and spices, and fresh-from-the-oven bread and baked goods. If you’re feeling peckish, pick up a sandwich from one of the deli counters or stop for lunch at one of the bistro-style restaurants. Food-tasting tours of Gothenburg often pass by Saluhallen Market Hall.

Things to know before you go

  • If you visit independently, don’t be afraid to request a taster before you buy—many stalls are happy to provide samples.

  • You’ll find paid public restrooms at the market.

  • Saluhallen market hall is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

Saluhallen Market Hall is located on Kungstorget Square in central Gothenburg, one block north of the canal. You can reach the market on foot from the city’s central attractions or ride the tram (lines 3, 4, 5, 7, or 10) or bus (lines 18 or 50) to the Gothenburg Kungsportsplatsen transit stop.

When to get there

The market hall is open Monday through Friday from mid-morning to early evening and Saturdays from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Get there early for the best selection of fresh produce and baked goods, or time your visit for lunch at one of the terrace restaurants, popular on sunny afternoons.

A culinary tour of Gothenburg

Make the market your first stop on your culinary tour of Gothenburg, followed by a Swedish fika (afternoon coffee and cake) at Da Matteo coffee house or a Michelin-starred dining experience at Koka restaurant. Other foodie hotspots include the waterfront Feskekörka fish market, open Tuesday through Saturday mornings; chef Martin Moses’ Human restaurant, famed for its Nordic cuisine; and Spike Brewery, the perfect spot for an introduction to Gothenburg’s burgeoning craft beer scene.
