Sandwiched between Weston Woods and the headland at Sand Point, Sand Bay in Somerset is a sweeping sand and shingle beach backed by unspoiled dunes. A favorite for hiking, horseback riding, dog walking, and seaside strolling—as well as birdwatching at Sand Point—Sand Bay also offers vistas of the River Severn and its two suspension bridges on a clear day.

The Basics

A popular beach situated close to Weston-super-Mare, Sand Bay is an easy spot to visit independently with dogs, children, or both. Stroll along the shoreline and comb the beach for shells and seaside critters, before grabbing something to eat and drink in one of the many nearby cafés. Views over South Wales can even be had on clear days, while birds such as swallows and curlews tend to congregate year-round near the rocky promontory of Sand Point.

  • Sand Bay is an excellent family-friendly beach in Weston-super-Mare, where you can enjoy a spot of beachcombing.

  • Horseback riders, dog walkers, and bird watchers are all common sights on Sand Bay beach.

  • The north end of the bay is overrun with spiky grasses.

  • There are a number of cafés and tearooms the length of the beach where you can enjoy a snack and a warm drink.

  • Due to its sand and shingle shoreline, Sand Bay beach is not easily accessible to wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.

How to Get There

Sand Bay is situated in Weston-super-Mare near Bristol and is easy to reach via private vehicle. There are free parking lots available nearby and buses also run close to the beach, notably the open-top Number 100 service from Weston-super-Mare. You can also reach Sand Bay beach on foot in around an hour from central Weston-super-Mare.

When to Get There

Sand Bay beach is accessible year-round, although it’s at its best during the sunnier summer months. This is also peak time, but thanks to the size of the beach, it’s unlikely that you’ll have to fight for a space to spread your towel (or enjoy a stroll).

What to Do Nearby

After a day at the beach in Weston-super-Mare, head to nearby Bristol, known for its great nightlife, galleries, and food scene, as well as the scenic Downs and street art galore. Nearby Bath also has lots of offer history buffs, not least those eponymous Roman baths and plenty of notable architecture, as seen on the Netflix show Bridgerton. And, of course, Glastonbury—famed for the festival of the same name—is close by too.
